April Fools Roundup

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Sorry for the uber late notice, everyone.

We’re going to head over to the Kodak Building 9 (please click the link to get directions) in the morning.  Aim to be there around 7:30AM but myself and at least 2 others are going to be there right at 6:30AM in order to catch the sunrise from the roof of the building.  Feel free to come at 6:30AM if you’d like to wake up etc, but don’t feel obliged.

Now here’s the scoop.  Park at the NoFills supermarket on the south side of Eglinton since there is no spot to park infront of the Kodak building, and as well, we don’t want to raise any suspicions since WE ARE NOT really suppose to be there.  Many photographers have gone over in the past, and I’m sure we won’t run into any trouble, but if this week’s plan doesn’t sound up your ally, please don’t feel compelled to attend.  We won’t be making a habit of going to places that we’re not always welcome and there will be plenty of opportunities in upcoming weeks.

Another thing to note is that this building IS dilapidated.  It’s important that we think safety and everyone goes at their own risk.  Just be careful of things on the floor etc.  There is also a lot of dust in the building, so avoid bringing too many lenses/changing your lenses too often.  A great idea would be to bring your second body if you’ve got one.  Also bring your flashes and avoid lugging around any studio strobes as bulky bags may be hard to get inside.   If anyone has any questions please ask – I know this is kind of late notice but we didn’t get too many responses on flickr.  Also pass this info on to anyone else you may think would enjoy coming out.   And feel free to respond if you’d like to let me know you’re coming, you don’t have to but it would be helpful to know how many to expect.

This should be a lot of fun and sunrise should be realllly beautiful tomorrow.  Hope to see you there!

Centennial Park

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Ahh that feeling of shooting… been really great to get out and shoot just for the sake of these past few weeks.  Particularly this Thursday we headed out to Centennial Park.  It was a suggestion from a Roundup member who couldn’t make it today so no one really knew quite what to expect.  Turned out that we managed to find a few spots to get some neat shots and what was even better, we saw some new faces join the Roundup group (which is essentially the idea!.. hopefully they enjoyed themselves…hehe).  The ball is rolling now and I’m extremely excited for next week to see how many people can come out and join us.  Again it was a fun day and great to meet a few more new photographers, learn what they do, how they do it and so on.  Too bad only one was a Nikon shooter ;).

One thing to note is that instead of using a Forum here to get updates and share pictures, I realized that perhaps Flickr group would be a much better solution to this.  So on that note, here is the newly formed Roundup Flickr Group! Feel free to join, but please only pics from our Thursday Roundups :).  I will be posting and discussing locations for upcoming weeks and perhaps taking votes on where others would like to go, as well as what times people might be able to attend etc..  I realize that not everyone will be able to make it every week, especially during certain times of day/night so I will do my best to ensure that we rotate between times of day.

And of course, here are some of the images that I personally took, but to see more and more importantly, images of others from the day, please visit the flickr group.

Forum Launch

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

forumThe Thursday Roundup is growing in popularity – honestly that makes me extremely excited.  Although I did realize that the common questions are: When? and Where?.  So in order to appropriately field these questions on a weekly basis, I’ve just launched a forum on the website.  There won’t be a link in my nav bar as this is not so much an open forum, rather a place to discuss the past, present, and future Roundups.  We’ll be able to share pictures and hopefully communicate ideas on where to shoot next, even make travel arrangements when possible.

You can find the link here: http://2dhouse.com/forum, or you can always find it on the links on the right of the blog page under “In House”.  If there are any questions regarding the forum, please ask away, and be patient, this is my first attempt at such an addition to my site, there may be some changes in the future and the forum may be moved, but I will keep everyone up to date regarding it!

As far as tomorrow’s Roundup goes.  There have been no final decisions made although Erindale Park, Port Credit, Streetville, or the roads of Milton are all currently options.  Hope to see some new faces!

Cheers,

There are NO Excuses

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

I was just speaking to an amateur photographer moments ago and we were on the discussion of equipment. Recently I wrote a post about having top of the line gear and how important I felt it was when it came time to ensure that I was doing the most for my clients. Well today we discussed gear in general and more importantly, for amateurs. I was really surprised to hear him say that his Nikon D90 was inadequate. I remember starting out not very long ago with a D80 as my first body, and believe me, the D90 is a great improvement on the D80. He felt like he was missing out on some features or having a Full Frame sensor. Overall he was very negative about the body he was using and said something that gives me shudders as a photographer to hear: “I wish I had a better camera so that I would be more motivated to use it.”.

AAAAHHH!!! That’s frustrating to hear. Especially from someone who is photographerizing has a hobby/passion. While I have said that I prefer and believe it important to use top of the line gear, this was meant as a professional. From a hobbyist, that is just the wrong attitude in my opinion.  How can you put something so qualitative on a hobby.  If you like photography, go out and shoot, and enjoy your pictures, it’s not as much about what you’re using as what you’re shooting.  Chase Jarvis says it best with his line “the best camera is the one that’s with you”  (forgive me if that’s not verbatim), and I agree.  A fair part of my portfolio was actually shot with the D80.  It’s a very capable camera and I still have it.  Although to be fair, would not consider using it these days since I’ve got some better gear.  Point is if it’s good enough to use in my portfolio, then the D90 should be good enough for a hobbyist and not used to make excuses as to why we have no motivation to shoot.

I do however still use the D80 as a behind the scenes camera, and if I’d like to have a body on me for personal use that isn’t gigantic.  Either way, the following shots (and yet a few more found in my portfolio that are not included here) were all taken with my D80.  Oh and as an aside, most of these photos never saw any editing, just the one of the river/bridge and the yellow leaf.  At this point in my photography career I really knew nothing about the world of post.

I think what I’d like taken away from this post is that in photography, and in ANY passion we might have, making excuses is a bad attitude.  There are lots of things that I’d love to have, or think might help me complete tasks.  Part of that challenge is having that perseverance to struggle through things anyway though.  I’m really not just talking about photography.  I find that there are a lot of people out there who would rather tell me all the problems and challenges they’re faced with that make them feel like it’s not worth trying to begin with.  That in my mind is more of a failure than jumping blindly into something, and failing miserably, because at least you tried.  One thing is for sure, if I had that mental attitude there would be no 2D Photography Inc., and I would be either pretending to inch my way through school until I had 10 PhD’s or I would be enduring some painfully dreary career some where.

Here’s the difference between the two bodies, my D80, and my current.  At the end of the day, they’re both capable of great shots!

I think there will be more on this subject to come.  I’ll stop here though

HDR Tutorial – Photo of the Week Follow Up

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

So last week I posted an HDR image as the photo of the week.  I had a couple of questions, nothing directly asking me for a tutorial but I thought that one great way to answer them, and any potential future questions would be to just give a demonstration on how we can turn 5 bracketed shots into a great HDR image using Aperture 3.0, as well as getting rid of a pesky wire we had in front of the church in the images taken.  Hence this post is mostly for those teckies who’d like to get that sort of information in, if you’re looking for entertainment (it’s going to be boring) – I’ll stop you here, trust me! So watch below to see how in just a few minutes we can make some significant improvements onto an image.

I hope that was informative. Thank you for watching.
