Hey All,
I was having a bit of a philosophical conversation over the weekend with two of my closest friends and the subject of being exceptional came up. It turned out we all had varied definitions of the word “exceptional” to begin with but we did also have our own unique points of view. I thought I would share mine in regard to how I think of the word exceptional.
To me, “exceptional” simply means: “able to perform well beyond average”. Kind of a simple thought but that’s how I feel. What’s more is that I feel everyone has the ability to be exceptional. We don’t all choose to use it, or know we have it, but it’s there. I feel like each one of us can do amazing things if we really wanted to.
I know a lot of extremely talented people, some of which either don’t know their own potential or refuse to admit it to themselves, who could be exceptional. I think of these people and even though they have done nothing exceptional so far, I know they are capable, and not only that, but could break that label in two if they wanted. I find it odd however that many of us sit and idle through life while having this buried, amazing, inner self waiting to be exploited and never let it go wild.
Imagine you had a genie and it would grant you any three wishes. Yeah yeah, same story you’ve heard. Well I’m not going to ask you what you want to wish for, I’m simply going to ask if you’d use the genie. Well, would you? Ask yourself this, and be completely honest. You’re most likely going to answer “yes”. Even if you’re a self righteous “I don’t need or want any gifts in life I want to achieve everything on my own” kind of person you’d be full of yourself if you didn’t use these wishes since you could use them to help others you self righteous SOB. Sorry.. carried away. Point is: genie + three wishes + you having said genie = you using three wishes… c’mon.
OK, so where are we? You’ve asked yourself a question… you’re not self righteous.. or you are, doesn’t matter, you want the genie. Here’s the thing. Almost anyone reading this blog has the ability to do anything they want. We live in a world where there are literally limitless possibilities when it comes to achieving your goals. There are countless paths to take to get where you want. If you want something bad enough you’ll make it happen otherwise you simply don’t want it as much as you want to want it.
Give yourself a challenging goal. Something you’re currently unsure you can do. Something that you’re not even on the path of doing. If you’re in school, don’t making it finishing school, or school related at all. Do this, give yourself that target that you really can’t know you can do. Then do it. Stop at nothing. Achieve it. Don’t make it a mission, make it a way of life. You’re going to complete that task and believe me when I say this “once you realize what you’re capable of, your life will never be the same again”. I’ll share a goal I gave myself a while ago with you right now. I wrote this down a long while ago and still keep it up somewhere I can see it daily. Goal: I want 1,000,000 YouTube views in total. Now, I’m a photographer, and I decided I wanted this before I even made a YouTube account or recorded my first video. Today I’m sitting at 3,980 views. I WILL get 1,000,000. I already know. Don’t ask me how, I just do. And it’s going to happen in less than a year. I already feel amazing because I didn’t “know” this before, but now I do. I don’t even have to finish this goal for the gains to start happening.
So go ahead, pick something and you WILL do it. Want to lose weight? You will. Quit smoking? You will. Go out with that girl? You will. Get the raise, the job, the gig, the scholarship, the grant, the loan, the “yes”, the car, the kids, the money, the vacation, the house, the power, the respect, the will, the happiness… you will. We can do all these things if only we truly want to. Today, you are your own genie. Oh, and you don’t have only three wishes. You are exceptional…
Thanks for reading.
