Is it Chili in Here?

There are times when bringing food in from home can be pretty great. Other times however you should perhaps consider your coworkers a bit more…

Smell you later,

Repeat Business and the Power of Valuable Work

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

So I have a client, let’s call them “The Institute for Quantum Computing“, or “IQC” for short. Now let’s say that IQC hires me every now and then to take care of their photographic needs. Well let’s go back in time and visit my first job with IQC before we get to the real topic at hand. They asked me to cover an event and I did. I billed them, they paid, they received their images and were very happy. I was very happy because everyone at IQC is kind of awesome, and I also got to meet a legend (to me) and I had a blast. Bla bla bla my job rocks. Now IQC had another event, and I know I did a great job for them the first time, and I was prompt polite and professional (aha! the three P’s of photography!.. well not really but) and so for them it was a no brainer. They hired me again and I had yet another wonderful time doing a job I loved to begin with. At this point it’s already safe to call IQC a repeat customer. I know that they’re happy with their images and I know that I did a great job. So what does this mean?

Well, as a photographer, you can overcharge people to get the most out of a job, or you can half-ass the editing or simply not have great energy, or use some equipment that’s questionable at the professional level or well.. etc… All this might gain you a shiny penny come the day of the job, but if anyone has ever had real repeat clients, you’ll know how much fun it is to go see them, with an already established relationship, and get the work done well, get paid again and have everything wrap up nicely. Half-assing this process will lose that potential for repeat business. Repeat clients are so great because they come back! Not only that but they have a knack for recommending you to other potential clients. So losing this potential is a massive flaw.

If you put your true effort behind your work, that tiring act of selling yourself, which I know you do, and I know you hate doing, will not be as necessary. After a period of time, you might only need to have a handful of clients to make your yearly income respectable. I know that I cherish my repeat clients a bit more than most. That’s not to say I care less about the one-off jobs, not at all actually. What I mean is that I know that through these repeat clients especially I will see major gains in my business.

Now of course we do have other repeat clients as well as IQC. I just had to mention them because of how much fun it is to actually shoot for them. There exists a chance that one of the employees over there will read this post, and I hope they don’t take me too seriously when I say that: I would probably come down to their institute for free, to shoot or not.. that’s how much fun I have while there. It’s great to know that I’ll be back there and I can look forward to a another gig sometime in the future.

Take care of your clients, and they will surely take care of you.

Photo of the Week, September 20th 2010

Monday, September 20th, 2010

We headed out to do some fun running shots earlier. It was looking like a great day for it, the car was packed with gear and we were pretty eager to get started. Traffic.. oh boy traffic.. by the time we actually managed to get to our site we only had minutes. Long story short, we were mostly going to shoot for fun but I had hoped to get some great stuff out of it. We got some decent shots but nothing that I would consider calling fantastic. It was mostly an issue of time. Had we had a bit longer I think we could have set up proper gear and really opened this shoot wide open but I suppose we’ll try again.

This week a fine lesson will be taught to everyone concerning lens care. I’ll let the video speak for itself.

Thanks for watching!

The Lengths we go to Sometimes..

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

As photographers, we all know how difficult some shots can be. I know that sometimes you work for days just to get one shot to go the way you want it to. It can be really frustrating. That’s why when I saw this video I was really impressed. The amount of work and detail that had to go into every shot of this video is crazy. And for no other reason than finding this kind of awesome, I thought I’d share. The team of at Blink did a great job hope you all can enjoy their hard work.  Photographers or videographers can both appreciate this sort of thing.

Good job, guys!

Class is in Session!

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Screen shot 2010-09-15 at 5.26.32 PMI could not be more excited to announce that 2D Photography Inc. will now be running a class aimed toward beginner photographers of all sorts!  For a while now I’ve been enjoying passing some info here and there to people during the roundups or asking random questions and it’s always been extremely fun to share that knowledge.  After being asked enough of the same questions I thought it’s to start a course.  A ton of work has gone into this weekend bootcamp of a class by myself and everyone at 2D.

Check out the class’s info here

We’ve got a great textbook made in-house and all of our own material selected by us, for you. I’m happy to say with confidence that this course is jam packed, literally, with awesome information not just for the beginner.  Intermediate level photographers will also surely benefit from the course although we are directing it to the beginner.

Next class is October 16th/17th and I’m sure will be a lot of fun.  We’ll cover absolutely everything you’ll need to know about your DSLR and how it works.  For anyone struggling with a new DSLR or just someone who’d like more understanding of what’s really going on in there, this course is perfect.

It’s going to be a lot of fun, very educational and over all just an awesome experience.  We’re hosting it right at the studio and will surround our students with an environment that could not be better for learning.

I’m really just bursting with excitement about this.  Very happy to be able to share it all with you.

Thank you and hope to see some of you there!
