It’s been an especially interested six months. There have been loads of developments and even more learning experiences. I find myself torn between paths and unsure which direction to follow. This is in no way a bad thing. This is fantastic! The only downside is I have been facing so many challenges I have become a little chocked up, clogged, if you will. With all the different options staring straight at me I have not decided which to focus on. It’s become obvios that while I wish I could act on all of them I must sacrifice some, or put them on hold.

Stuff coming soon.

So we’ve been making a lot of Rube Goldberg machines this year. We’ll end 2012 with a total of six in fact, which, if you’d asked me the year before would have been six more than I would have guessed.

Anyhow, to close the year we wanted to deviate a bit from the usual and thought we’d make a more challenging Rube Goldberg machine. We did. This was definitely one of, if not, the most difficult projects we’ve done but man was it fun. We’ll have some behind the scenes videos coming out shortly. Unfortunately we’re a little busy with another Rube but we’re doing our best to get those videos out to you soon.

In the mean time we hope you enjoy this video!

Cheers,

Back in July of this year we were commissioned by Central Films and Director Vicky Torres to build a Rube Goldberg machine in Mexico City. The project was for a bread company, actually pretty much the biggest bread company in the world even though you’ve likely never heard of them, Grupo Bimbo, and the machine had to make a sandwich in just 20 seconds!

The machine was quite challenging to build but we had a lot of help and Central Films made the project a ton of fun for us. The final video is now airing across Mexico as a national television ad. Below is the final 20 second spot as well as a shorter, modified rube to fit into a 10 second spot.

Lastly here is a shot on-board the Arri Alexa that was used to shoot this ad side-by-side with the final video. Just to give an idea of editing and point of view.

Dana was referred to us by a previous client and I’m always a bit nervous when that happens because I feel like I have to live up to what they’re expecting. That didn’t last long with Dana though as we got some great shots out of her really early into the shoot. That always makes me more comfortable and I’d imagine her more comfortable, too, knowing she’s going to be able to take something out of this shoot.

She was a natural when it came to headshots and that made her super-easy to shoot.

I’ve been using the D800 for these shots with the 70-200 VRII taking advantage of that short minimal focal length and standing about four feet away. We’ll try and post the lighting in more detail as soon we can squeeze in taking some example shots during a shoot. For now, here’s Dana’s choices for her final shots.

Well it’s 12:30AM right now and I’m at the studio working on a project. Was here last night until about 2:00AM and I’ve sort of realized how much fun it is. I’m still coming in at a regular hour in the morning but it’s just that this particular project has got me all excited and time has just been blowing by the last few days.

I wish I could say that I always feel this way but I must admit that there’s a lot of times when, as a business owner, you just have to take care of business. That’s something that for now, I have to take care of a lot and as a result I’m not always working on stuff that I love.

Right now, these next few weeks, it’s a different story. I’m working on another in-house Rube Goldberg Machine and I’m feeling addicted. It’s been a lot of fun so far and I’m only two days into the build. This is a feeling that I always get when an awesome photoshoot comes up or some sort of sweet video production. But I think these Rube Goldbergs meld all of my favourite things together so nicely that it’s almost incomparable to the each of the separate parts of what I do. You could say the sum outweighs the individuals.

One thing is for sure. If you’re getting into the awesome creative industry you’d better be feeling something like this. Otherwise I’d say it’s just not worth it. The whole point of being in this industry is to be happy (at least the way I see it). Sure there’s going to be tough times but there’d better be some rewards, as well. Some people might say I’m addicted to work…. To that I’d say “HA! I don’t WORK! I play for money :D”. By that I just mean I don’t consider my job work at all. It’s just my life. It makes me happy and the way I see it, I’m addicted to a happy life.

Be happy.

Dave

PS I’m oddly proud of part of the Rube I just built. I am not really experienced when working with metal and I don’t have a welder so I have to make due with what I’ve got. It’s a challenge, which is a big part of why I’m having so much fun. Here’s an image of what I just built. I’ll let you guess what it might be… for now.

I was thinking some time ago “am I working as much as I could be? Better yet am I working as much as I want to be?”. The answer was regretfully “no”. I mean we’ve been pursuing things to a point where I’ve been quite happy with results and the amount of energy being put towards business. Ultimately I knew we could be doing a bit more, though. As a result a lot of things have changed recently and I’ve been attempting to restructure my business plan a bit differently. Trying to be even more efficient with the existing workload and combining that with a desire to do more than I’ve been doing of late, a new link has been born upon 2D’s navbar.

I present to you all, headshots!!

The decision was a spontaneous one, I’ll admit. Regardless I’m quite happy with it so far. Turns out headshots are a lot of fun. I’d love to say they’re easy but I can’t. I can say that they’re very rewarding and offer a massive opportunity to learn and hone your skills. I put together a quick portfolio and will officially be offering my services to any and all who may seek a simple clean headshot. My style is far from determined but for now I’ll enjoy the mystery behind it. Below are a few samples of the brief gallery we’ve got going on and to see more or find out additional details just click here.

I’m really looking forward to developing this new skill and meeting a whole whack of great peeps.

‘Til your headshot session – cheers!

As mentioned, we’re working on pumping out some short videos lately. This most recent video was shot nearly entirely on the D800 with some clips shot on the D4. Hopefully you guys enjoy this fun piece.

In lieu of the theme of the video we actually sat on the finished product for a couple of weeks before releasing which I’m sure is obvious once you’ve seen it. I’d like to thank Dan Lebl and Sheila Cording for doing a great job as the role of grandson/grandmother in this video. And with any luck we’ll have a few more shorts coming out in the next few weeks/months.

So lately I have been getting into video. That’s nothing new, but 2D’s video portfolio isn’t what I’d like it to be so we set out to beef it up. Sadly we had to wait till we got our hands on the newly acquired D4 to do so. That day came and within a week we set up our first short and got it off. Take 2 minutes and have a look below.

As mentioned, this was shot entirely on the D4 at 720p 60fps. Overall I’m very happy with the results. So far both photo and video performance have met or exceeded my expectations for the D4 and I’m looking forward to having it in my arsenal for the next while. For the tracking we used a manfrotto video tripod with a cinevate atlas 10 mounted to it and a 701 head on that. Some shots were done with a boom stand but that’s essentially it. Filmed/edited in about 36 hours. We’re hoping to put out a series of these short pieces in the coming months so stay tuned, they’re all very different with only the fact that they’re short in common.

Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed!
