The Preston Light Ranger 2 is a focus assist system designed to help focus pullers judge distance quickly and accurately on modern high-resolution productions. Using an infrared measuring system with 16 simultaneous distance zones, it overlays scene depth information directly onto the monitor, allowing the assistant to evaluate focus across the frame without looking away from the image. The on-screen overlay works in relation to the current HU4 focus setting, giving immediate visual feedback on whether subjects are closer, farther, or within depth of field. It is especially useful for crane, dolly, vehicle, Steadicam, low-light, and shallow depth-of-field work where maintaining critical focus is more demanding.
